What Is An Opiate?
An opiate is a medication or illegal drug that is either derived from the opium poppy, or that mimics the effect of an opiate (a synthetic opiate). Opiate drugs are narcotic sedatives that depress activity of the central nervous system, reduce pain and induce sleep.
These drugs include opium, morphine, codeine, and heroin - the natural ingredients of the poppy. In addition, they include synthetic derivatives such as codeine-derived narcotics including Tylenol® with Codeine, Percoset®, Oxycontin®, Vicodin® Darvon® (propoxyphene), and methadone.
Chemical dependency is a chronic brain disease in which the neurochemistry of the brain changes causing the craving for these chemicals.
The long-term use of opiates can produce addiction, and overuse can result in overdose and potential death.
What Is Maintenance to Abstinence?
An intensive medically supervised outpatient treatment program for chronic addiction to opiates, of about 2 years, that will allow you to move from your current level of drug usage to being completely free of any addictive opiate.
This highly effective and intensive treatment regimen includes three phases:
- Medically supervised stabilization at the right level of treatment medications.
- Structured use of medications and intensive individual, group and family therapy to carry out a 2 year individualized treatment plan in order to get back your health, your job and your family.
- Continuing outpatient care focusing on being completely drug-free by employing comprehensive counseling therapy and state-of-the-art medications.
This treatment program is designed primarily for individuals who are addicted to opiates but have been using them for a relatively short period of time and whose goal is to abstain completely from all drug usage.
Our program integrates highly effective counseling with state-of-the-art medication treatments. (Buprenorphine is available). It is followed by a 3-month support program which offers weekly counseling, support groups and comprehensive referrals to address patient needs.
